It was from the animal control officer who came to pick up the "wild cats" Mom has been nurturing. He said, "I loved your book. It made me cry, and it made me laugh, and it made me think. You can't ask for a better book than that!" I agree whole-heartedly :)Barbhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04521188068533507569noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6327214087565036877.post-88528728930672041552011-05-08T15:21:00.000-09:302011-05-08T15:21:28.720-09:30The Message Glorious now ON SHELF at Arlston's in Corydon

Mom's book is now on the SHELF at Arlston's Bookstore in downtown Corydon, Indiana. This bookstore has opened in the old Griffin's Department Store on Chestnut and On the Square. (Bill's Mom Fern worked at Griffin's for years and enjoyed it so much.) Mr. & Mr. Alstott were so congenial in accepting Mom's book on commission. Two copies were placed in their Christian book section, one in Local Author's, and one copy placed on a small book stand I provided on the top of a book shelf in a great location.
I left 10 softbound copies, 10 bookmarks, one book card from Tate, and our business card. Thought I would share a couple that never made the cut. Scott has entertained us for years with his own special brand of wit and wisdom and at times his "quirky" view of life.
*****************************************
Last year, Scott sang "He Touched Me" alcapoco (Scott's word for a capella) at the Down Syndrome of Southern Indiana Talent Show. Another boy sang really off key and struggled mightily to make it through his performance. Scott clapped heartily for him, then turned to me and whispered, "Well, I feel sorry for him but you gotta work with what you have."
A recent Sunday School lesson was about the midwives who tried to save the Israelites baby boys (in Exodus). Mom said when Scott was studying his lesson, he asked her, "What are midwives?" After she explained to him, he nodded and said, "Oh, kinda like the stork."Barbhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04521188068533507569noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6327214087565036877.post-495482339358414992010-07-31T16:10:00.000-09:302010-07-31T16:29:40.220-09:30The Old Louisville Coffeehouse book signing eventWe had a wonderful afternoon book signing event at the Old Louisville Coffeehouse. If you ever get a chance to drop by this cute little cozy Victorian coffee shop, please do. It's at the corner of S. 4th Street and Hill in Louisville....a cute shop in a lovely neighborhood of old stately homes (a walk down the side walk is also in order). Michael and Avery spent an hour engrossed over a chess table game. Mom, Scott and I enjoyed chatting with our guests ..... including many of my Mom's sister's family who live in Louisville. Mom's only sister Alice died in an automobile accident 54 years ago, leaving 6 children. Mom said, "Alice would be so pleased that we've been able to keep in contact through the years." It is so exciting to see the positive progress in the understanding, recognition and celebration of these special children. There are still some hurdles these families are climbing but the path is opening up more and more. I really honor my Mom and those who worked years ago to open the path. For years these children were institutionalized and, as my Mom said in her book "a Down's child in an institution would be nothing but a vegetable; it takes people, and motivation and love all around them to make them bloom." When Scott was evaluated by a professional in 1973 Mom writes, "That day, the expert took Scott into a room by himself and, after a spell, she called me in. She said, "Well, Mrs. Kemp, Scott has some real problems with learning. You can send him to school if you want to, but I doubt he can really ever learn anything." She went on, "He can't count, he doesn't understand or follow simple instructions," and she proceeded to relate all that he couldn't do. I said, "But I read to him all the time and he understands!" She looked at me in pitying way, and said, "Well, honey, you can read to him if you want to, but I doubt he understands what you read." I distinctly remember my response. I pounded my fists on the table and said, "Well, he does!" (From The Message Glorious by Doris Kemp with Barbara Radmacher)--------

I love that picture of Mom pounding her fists on the table in Scott's defense. To me, it's a statement as strong as Rosa Parks keeping her seat on a bus in 1955 and the great pioneer women forging the trail west in the early 1850's. ---------- The road is paved....roll on!!
Barbhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04521188068533507569noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6327214087565036877.post-60804789096703928452010-02-21T10:59:00.000-09:302010-07-27T15:54:06.098-09:30Down Syndrome of Southern Indiana Talent Show on YouTubeThe Down Syndrome Assoc of Southern Indiana Talent Show of 2009 is now on YouTube. What an awesome road trip to Mt Vernon, Ohio. God definitely had His hand in bringing this trip about. Michael sent a copy of The Message Glorious to a friend in Mt Vernon last Christmas. This year, when her women's ministry team started planning their program for this year and the topic was to be God's faithfulness from generation to generation she thought of Mom's book. From that...came our invitation to speak at their Christmas program AND they purchased 95 books to give to the women of their church. Mom (now 87), Scott and I thoroughly enjoyed our time with these new friends. It is so exciting to meet and share with new people.Barbhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04521188068533507569noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6327214087565036877.post-10114260587808039572009-11-12T08:15:00.000-09:302010-03-02T18:18:42.033-09:30Updates on The Message GloriousSo, it's been a year since The Message Glorious was published. How has it done?

1. Mom and I have had 11 book signing events, 1 newspaper interview, 1 radio station interview, and 6 speaking engagements. We have a speaking engagement coming up December 5th in Mount Vernon, Ohio...a road trip!
2. The book is available on http://www.tatepublishing.com/ - http://www.amazon.com/ - http://www.barnesandnoble.com/ - http://www.borders.com/ - 15 + other online sites by http://www.google.com/ search and is now on ebay.
3. It is stocked in the gift shops of 2 hospitals and was carried in our local Christian bookstore until it closed its' doors.
4. It is available in 4 libraries.
5. The book was entered in Best Books of Indiana contest this year. (didn't win, but 2 copies were then placed in the Indiana State Library)
6. Our publisher tells us that over 1200 copies of the book have been sold "for the life of the book" (as they term it).

For Mom and myself, the best part has been the notes we have received from those who have read the book. Here are a few of the comments:
**I can't put your book down. It's so inspiring. I know it is going to touch many people.
**My husband and I were so blessed by the book. We lost a daughter in a car accident, and we found such comfort in the book and identified with your comment about the loss of a child leaving a hole that is never filled.
**Thank you for sharing your book, your memories and so much of your life with me in this beautiful way.
**This book is so special. I read it in two evening and now plan to re-read it and study the Scriptures that are throughout. What a story - an autobiography so compelling.
**Wow and double wow! Just never know who have a book inside of them. I knew of your journaling, but had no idea of the results. Along with wow - praise the Lord for the results. You've put together a wonderful testimony.
**I read the book in one night straight through and thought it was truly amazing and inspiring...I cried and laughed in equal measure. What a labor of love for you both. It really shows on every page. Thank you!
**Your book has touched my heart and my spirit. While reading your book, I laughed and cried but mostly I found peace and a will to stay strong.
**I just wanted to thank you for sharing your story of how God has worked in your life. It was a pleasure to read and very inspiring. It is amazing to see how God touches our lives and loves us in so many ways.

Wow! We have been so blessed by these and other positive comments.

Not to us, O Lord, not to us but to your name be the glory,
because of your love and faithfulness. Much of Mom's book is based on this Scriptural truth. As life goes on, we see more and more evidence of God actively at work in our daily lives.
In the past 4 weeks, Mom and my brother Scott have been living with us as their gas fireplace malfunctioned sending black soot into their four-room home. The insurance has been quick in their response, but the clean-up is taking weeks and weeks.
We met the manager of the clean-up company and Mom's assigned clean-up crew on February 9th. Mom immediately gave them each a copy of her book, The Message Glorious. Jerry, the manager said he never reads, other than Scripture verses each day to get him started. He promised Mom, however, that he would try to read her story.
In the weeks since, he has spoken to Mom regarding what her book has meant to him. He even showed Joe, the painter, the picture my brother David painted (which still sets on Mom's fireplace mantel) and told Joe the story from the book. He shared with Mom how he gave up smoking with God's help. He spoke of how inspired he was by Mom's story.
WOW! If Mom and Scott had not had this "sooting event" in their home, her book would NEVER have been read by Jerry. Wow! By God's design!Barbhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04521188068533507569noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6327214087565036877.post-35395872871761327862009-01-29T10:15:00.000-09:302009-02-03T12:59:51.606-09:30The Message Glorious tells of God's faithfulness to Mom throughout her lifetime; through her early years when she ignored God's presence, through the death of two of her children, and through the birth and life of my brother Scott, who has Down Syndrome. In his 45 years, Scott has astounded us with his wit and wisdom, entertained us with his one-liners, and blessed us with his special, unconditional brand of love.
"What's the matter, Mom, aren't His promises good enough for you?" was a question my brother David asked Mom as she was attempting to reassure him of God's love and faithfulness. David died of cancer when he was 12 years old.
